MANILA, Philippines – On May 12, 2026, a united front of prominent academic leaders and labor organizations took decisive action against the Commission on Higher Education’s (CHED) proposed reframing of the General Education (GE) curriculum. Through the filing of formal Position Statements, the coalition successfully challenged the proposed changes, citing significant concerns regarding their impact on the integrity of Philippine higher education. The effort was spearheaded by key representatives, including: • Rene Tadle, representing the Council of Teachers and Staff of Colleges and Universities of the Philippines (then-USTFU Executive Vice President-Elect). • John Vincent Ignacio, representing the UST Faculty Union (then-USTFU External Vice President). • Prof. Paolo Bolaños, representing the Department of Philosophy and various philosophy organizations. The movement gained significant momentum as these leaders were joined by major institutional allies, including the Centro Escolar University Faculty and Allied Workers Union, the Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT), and Tanggol Wika. A Seat at the Table Following the formal submission of their objections, a delegation of these representatives was invited to a high-level dialogue with CHED Commissioner Shirley Agrupis to directly address the controversial provisions of the proposed curriculum. A Victory for Academic Integrity The combined pressure from labor unions and professional academic organizations proved effective. In a major development for the academic community, CHED ultimately postponed the implementation of the reframed curriculum. The announcement was made on 17 May 2026. This victory underscores the power of collective bargaining and academic solidarity in safeguarding the quality and focus of national education standards.
